Guide to GST Refund Procedures for Exporters and SEZ Units

Claiming a GST refund is an important liquidity management task for exporters and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) supply units. Businesses can secure refunds under two core channels: exporting under Letter of Undertaking (LUT) without tax payment, or exporting with tax payment followed by a rebate claim.

Core GST Refund Steps:

  1. File GST RFD-01 return online via the GST Common Portal.
  2. Upload the Annexure-1 statement listing shipping bills, export invoices, and bank realization certificates (FIRC/eBRC).
  3. System generates an ARN (Application Reference Number) tracking ID.
  4. Jurisdictional officers review documentation and issue RFD-06 sanction order within 60 days.

Documentation Checklist:

  • Export invoices matching shipping bills.
  • FIRC/eBRC showing realization of foreign exchange.
  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings showing matching tax ledgers.
